Glenville, WV – West Virginia filmmaker and Glenville State College Alum Kevin Carpenter of Braxton County opened up the 10th Annual West Virginia Filmmaker Festival Wednesday, September 30th in the GSC Mollohan Campus Community Center as part of the Progressive Film Series. Carpenter serves as Director for the West Virginia Filmmaker Festival which was held at the Landmark Studio for the Arts in Sutton, West Virginia October 2-4th.
Carpenter screened three films that evening including: ‘Archives,’ ‘Farmer Brown,’ and ‘Elk Hotel.’ Carpenter’s most popular award-winning piece ‘Elk Hotel’ is based and filmed at the ‘haunted’ Elk Hotel in Sutton, West Virginia. So fascinated with the history and legends of the building, Carpenter bought the Elk Hotel in 1999 with plans of filming within. Fulfilling his dreams, Carpenter completed ‘Elk Hotel.’ This film is in the horror/history genre and has brought much attention to this Braxton County landmark.
Graduating from Glenville State College with a Bachelor of Science in Business Administration degree in 1987, Carpenter spent his days at GSC participating in GSC Theatre. He was interested in all aspects of the stage by being a performer, prop technician, worked on sets and lighting, and put together costumes for productions. Carpenter earned his Master of Arts in Media Studies from West Virginia State University in 2006 and currently works for the West Virginia Tax Department.
GSC Major Gifts Officer Bob Henry Baber served as the liaison for bringing Carpenter and the West Virginia Filmmaker Festival to the Glenville State College campus. “We hope this will be the beginning of a relationship between the festival and GSC. In the future, we intend to invite other filmmakers to debut their work in the Progressive Film Series, which is organized by GSC Associate Professor of History Arthur DeMatteo. This is a wonderful convergence of cinematic streams and energy for our campus,” said Baber.
